The astrolabe doesn't just look at where the planets are in the sky, it also looks at how the horizon cut the sky where you were born. The time of birth determines the ascendant and zenith, and also determines how the twelve houses are arranged.

The signs of planets such as the Sun, Venus, and Mars usually do not change in a few minutes, but the ascendant, house position, and four axes may change quickly.

The moon moves very quickly. If the moon changes signs on the date of birth and the time of birth is uncertain, even the moon sign may not be determined. Even if the moon sign does not change, the moon degree and phase accuracy will be affected.

The moon is related to security, emotions, and intimate relationships, so inaccurate timing will affect many core judgments.

When looking at the current stage, transit in house, progressed Moon, Solar Return Ascendant, Moon Return, etc. all depend on the time of birth. The more inaccurate the time, the less precise it is to determine when a certain field is triggered.

If you only look at planets and constellations, you can tolerate a rough time; if you want to look at houses and time windows, you need to be more accurate.

If you don’t know the time of birth at all, you can first use the timeless chart to look at the planets, constellations and partial aspects, and downgrade the judgment of the ascendant, house position, four axes, life ruler and house placement. Don't force a conclusion about the exact house position.

If you have a rough time range, you can try to adjust the timing, but the timing needs to be extrapolated from life events, and you cannot just guess what the rise looks like.

When entering birth information, try to use the birth certificate, hospital records, or the closest date in a family member's memory. Then check whether the Ascendant, Zenith, Moon degrees, and planetary placements are sensitive to time changes.

If the time is uncertain, pay special attention when reading the report: any part involving the ascendant, house position, four axes, life ruler and precise time window needs to reduce the confidence level.

A precise birth time is especially important for the Ascendant, house cusps, angles, chart ruler, Moon degree near a boundary, and time-sensitive techniques. The Sun sign and many slow-planet sign placements may remain stable across a modest time range, but their house placement may not. State which claims survive uncertainty and which do not.

If a recorded time places the Ascendant close to a sign boundary, a small correction may move the chart ruler and house emphasis. A responsible reader compares both versions, identifies the placements that remain constant, and avoids choosing the version that tells the more flattering story. Family memory, documents, local time rules, and dated life events can help narrow the range, but they do not justify invented precision.

Rectification should compare multiple candidate times against several dated life events and disclose the assumptions used. One matching event is not enough, because many charts can be made to fit a single story. The result should remain a working range unless the evidence is independently strong.

Label the chart as confirmed, approximate, or unknown. For an uncertain time, prioritize sign-level and aspect-level evidence, use wider house conclusions, and avoid precise prediction. Astrology cannot recover a missing fact with certainty and cannot replace documentation or professional advice in consequential matters.

A birth time can be reliable enough for a sign-level discussion while still being too uncertain for exact houses or an angle-based timing claim. Separate those levels in the written report. For example, a planet’s sign and close aspect may remain stable across the time range, while its house and the chart ruler may change. The reader should see which statements are robust, which are provisional, and what new document or event record would improve the judgment. This is more useful than assigning one global confidence label.

A missing minute and a wrong time zone do not create the same problem. First confirm the local date, time zone history, daylight-saving rule, and whether the recorded time is civil time or a family estimate. Then calculate a range rather than quietly correcting it to make the chart fit. A chart that changes because of a known convention should be relabeled and recalculated; a chart that changes only within a small range can keep the stable evidence while weakening angle-based claims.

The time of birth helps calculate the rising sign, palace position, four axis, house cusps, lord of life, and many time judgments. A small change can move a cusp or alter an angular relationship, while most planetary signs may remain stable. The practical condition is not “perfect time or no reading”: use high confidence for stable placements, medium confidence for broad themes, and lower confidence for house-specific claims when the school hours or record is uncertain.

Record the source of the time, its rounding, and the possible range. Then compare what remains stable across that range: planets by sign, broad aspects, and themes that do not depend on the rising sign. Only use the rising sign, four axis, or a time technique after the range is narrow enough. A rectified time is a hypothesis that needs dated life events and should be labeled as such, not presented as a discovered fact.

Suppose a fictional birth record gives 08:10–10:10. The Moon, Sun, and Mercury signs stay stable, but the Midheaven moves across a house boundary and changes the lord of life's house. One chart may place the career emphasis in public management; another may place it in skill-building and service. Compare both charts with a dated job change, not with a preferred story. Verify which interpretation survives the range and state the uncertainty in any forecast.

A recorded minute may be rounded, copied, or delayed, while an approximate time can still support stable planetary analysis. Do not use a narrow house claim to make medical, legal, financial, relationship, or safety decisions. Return to the time range, compare stable and unstable conclusions, and keep a record of what new evidence would change the chart. Astrology cannot replace those real-world judgments.
