An orb table sets a working tolerance for how close two chart points must be before an aspect is counted. Orbs vary by tradition, planet, aspect, chart purpose, and software, so a table is a method choice—not a guarantee that every listed aspect matters equally.
An orb is a tolerance around exactness
An aspect is exact at a particular angular distance, while an orb defines how far from that distance a reader is willing to count the relationship. If a square is exact at ninety degrees, the chosen orb determines whether an eighty-six-degree or ninety-four-degree distance is included. The orb is not a physical force and does not prove intensity. It is a reading rule that creates consistency and should be stated whenever an interpretation depends on it.
There is no single universal orb table
Different schools give wider or narrower orbs according to aspect type, planet, luminary, chart purpose, and whether the aspect is applying or separating. Some astrologers allow wider luminary orbs; others prefer strict orbs for minor aspects and specialist techniques. Software defaults are not neutral facts. Record the table or rule used, because changing the orb can change which aspects appear in a report and therefore change the reading order.
Start with the aspect before the number
A close conjunction, opposition, square, trine, or sextile usually belongs to a different interpretive family than a wide minor aspect. Identify the aspect, planets, signs, houses, and question first, then use the orb to assess priority. A numerical distance without context is not an interpretation. The same orb may be more useful for a major aspect between visible planets and less useful for an obscure point with no connection to the question.
Applying and separating add a time-like emphasis
Some traditions distinguish applying aspects, in which the planets are moving toward exactness, from separating aspects, in which exactness has passed. This can be used to describe developing or already familiar emphasis, but the rule is technical and depends on motion, not on a promise that an event will occur. State whether the chart is being read with this distinction. Do not turn applying into “will happen” or separating into “already over” without external confirmation.
Worked example: why two reports can disagree
Suppose Mercury and Saturn are ninety-four degrees apart. A report using a six-degree square orb may not count the relationship; a report using a wider method may include it as a weak square. Both reports should disclose the rule. A careful synthesis might say that communication and responsibility are worth checking because the planets also rule relevant houses, while the wide aspect alone is not enough. The reader can then compare actual study, work, and communication patterns rather than treating software output as a verdict.
Tightness should change the weight, not just yes or no
A useful table can classify aspects as exact, close, moderate, or wide instead of treating the threshold as a binary switch. A tight aspect may deserve earlier attention; a wide aspect may be a background factor that needs repetition elsewhere. This keeps the interpretation from jumping when a distance changes by one degree. The purpose of an orb is to control relevance and reading order, not to create artificial certainty.
Do not add orbs together across a chain
If one planet aspects a second and the second aspects a third, the first and third do not automatically share the sum of those orbs. Each relationship needs its own calculation. Likewise, a planet near a cusp is not automatically conjunct every planet in the neighboring house. Keep geometric evidence separate from interpretive association. This discipline prevents charts from becoming a web in which every symbol is declared connected.
Contrast: software visibility versus interpretive priority
An aspect may appear in a chart table because it falls within the software’s default orb, yet remain low priority because it is wide, minor, or unrelated to the question. Another aspect may be slightly outside a preferred default but matter because it is exact to an angle or repeats through rulership. Visibility is not relevance. Review the calculation and then rank the result through the whole chart.
Verification method for orb decisions
Record the planet degrees, aspect angle, separation, orb table, motion, applying or separating status, houses, rulers, and topic. Compare the interpretation under a strict and a wide orb. If the conclusion changes completely, report the uncertainty. Test the proposed mechanism against dated examples and look for a counterexample. A strong article teaches readers how to reproduce the decision rather than hiding it behind a software label.
Choose a table before you inspect the answer
Changing the orb after seeing the chart can become a form of confirmation bias: a reader widens the tolerance until the desired aspect appears. Choose the rule in advance, apply it consistently, and disclose exceptions. If a luminary or angle uses a different tolerance, explain why that tradition permits it. When comparing two methods, show both outputs and state which conclusion is robust across them. This makes the table a research choice rather than a post hoc decoration.
An orb is not a substitute for interpretation
A close aspect can still be irrelevant to the question, while a wider aspect can become meaningful when it repeats through rulership and life history. The table controls geometric inclusion; it does not decide whether the planet’s function is constructive, difficult, visible, or actionable. Finish the calculation, then return to sign, house, condition, context, and evidence. Never let a tight number do the work of a missing argument.
Use uncertainty bands for borderline aspects
When an aspect sits near the edge of the chosen orb, label it as borderline rather than forcing a yes or no. Give the reader the stronger interpretation that remains if the aspect is removed, then describe what the borderline contact might add. This prevents one degree of software rounding from changing the entire narrative. It also teaches a better habit: important conclusions should survive small changes in method.
Boundary: an orb cannot prove an event or trait
An orb table cannot diagnose personality, predict a date, prove compatibility, or decide a health, financial, legal, workplace, or safety question. It is a technical convention used to control which relationships receive attention. Keep the claim proportional to the aspect’s exactness, relevance, and supporting evidence, and let real-world observation correct the interpretation.
The Orb reference table is a reading filter, not a list to memorize
An Orb table helps a reader decide which contacts deserve a headline, which belong in supporting evidence, and which should remain background. Its value is not that one number makes an aspect true; its value is that conclusion strength should match geometric closeness and the method being used. Tables differ because a natal conjunction, a fast transit, a synastry contact, and a minor point do not carry the same interpretive job. Use the table to limit overclaiming, not to erase a meaningful pattern.
Mechanism: combine tolerance with weight, accuracy, and repetition
Read the listed orb alongside the aspect type, the planets involved, angularity, house rulers, exactness, and repetition. A tight aspect between a personal planet and an angle may be central. A similar numerical orb involving a background asteroid may be a prompt for curiosity rather than a main-line conclusion. For transits, record the applying and exact dates; for synastry, check whether both people experience the contact through their natal charts. The filter is strongest when it also records the question and the evidence that follows.
Worked case: turn a table row into a graded statement
Imagine a report lists a close Sun-Saturn conjunction and a wider Venus-Neptune sextile. Write the first as a stronger structural hypothesis: identity and responsibility may repeatedly meet. Write the second as a softer possibility: attraction or aesthetics may invite idealization when other evidence agrees. Then test both with concrete examples, repeated houses or rulers, and the person's choices. If only the wide contact fits one memorable story, keep it in the background. The table has done its job when the prose becomes more precise, not when every line disappears.
Contrast, verification, and boundary: a reference table cannot certify a conclusion
Do not treat the largest permitted orb as permission to make the strongest claim, and do not treat a smaller orb as proof of a good or bad outcome. Record the table version, calculation settings, aspect, orb, planets, houses, technique, evidence, confidence, and review date. Recheck if the birth time or house system changes. Astrology cannot replace medical, legal, financial, employment, relationship, or safety assessment; the table governs wording discipline, not life decisions.
