The twelve palaces of Ziwei Dou Shu are a map of life domains, not twelve fixed personality types. The Life Palace may organize questions about initiation and a central axis; the Spouse Palace concerns partnership dynamics; the Wealth Palace concerns resources and exchange; and the Career Palace concerns roles, authority, and public evaluation. The remaining palaces add family, health routines, travel, friends, property, children, and siblings as distinct fields. Start by asking where the question falls, then read stars and networks as conditional mechanisms. A palace can show what to investigate; it cannot by itself prove an event, motive, diagnosis, or destiny.

A palace names the object of a question. It does not say “this person is a Career Palace” or “a difficult Spouse Palace makes someone bad at love.” The Life Palace and Body Palace are entry points into the same chart but answer different layers: one can frame a central mode of initiation, while the other can describe where practical involvement or acquired focus is placed under the chosen tradition. The Spouse Palace can describe the structure of partnership, not a partner’s entire character. Wealth can involve resources, values, and exchange, not a guaranteed bank balance. Career can involve responsibility and reputation, not a guaranteed occupation.

Use the palace names as disciplined boundaries. Life asks how a person initiates, organizes, and responds; Body asks where lived investment becomes visible. Spouse asks how partnership, negotiation, and shared commitments operate. Wealth asks how resources are received, managed, exchanged, and valued. Career asks what roles, authority, output, and public evaluation require. Property asks the conditions of home and accumulated assets; Travel asks external settings and movement; Friends asks groups, collaborators, and social support. Health routines, parents, children, and siblings each have their own relational field. These meanings overlap in real life, so the correct palace is chosen by the question rather than by a dramatic keyword.

Main stars, auxiliary stars, auspicious stars, and malefic stars describe possible ways a palace may operate: initiating, storing, coordinating, protecting, competing, explaining, delaying, exposing, or absorbing pressure. Do not translate a star directly into “good person,” “rich person,” or “unlucky marriage.” The same operating mode can help in one field and cost more in another. A consolidating star in Wealth may support careful budgeting but become over-control in Spouse; a visible star in Career may support public accountability but also increase exposure. Read the star with the palace domain, combination, support, and observable behaviour.

The palace grid is not twelve sealed boxes. Read a target palace with its opposite palace and the two trine palaces, commonly called San Fang Si Zheng or the Three Parties and Four Uprightnesses. The network can provide resources, pressure, mirrors, external conditions, or a correction to the first impression. A strong Career Palace with a strained Wealth or Travel link may describe authority that is expensive to exercise. A quiet Spouse Palace may still be affected by the Life, Travel, and social-support network. The network does not rescue every difficult symbol; it shows which conditions make a conclusion more or less plausible.

When the selected school uses Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, and Hua Ji, identify the source star, the transformation, the destination palace, and the real-life domain before interpreting. A flow toward Wealth can make access, attachment, or resource management relevant; a flow toward Career can make authority or accountability relevant; a flow toward Spouse can make exchange or friction in partnership relevant. None of these is a universal score. Hua Lu does not guarantee money, Hua Quan does not guarantee a title, Hua Ke does not guarantee approval, and Hua Ji does not guarantee disaster. If the transformation convention is school-specific or unrelated to the question, keep the uncertainty visible.

Separate the base chart from time layers. The natal palace structure can describe a relatively enduring field; a major cycle can make one network more visible or shift practical emphasis; an annual layer can create a shorter review window. “Career is part of the chart” is not the same claim as “this decade asks for a leadership negotiation,” and neither is the same as “a promotion will happen this year.” State which layer supports each sentence and what direct evidence would confirm it. Timing tells the reader when to observe, prepare, or review, not what must happen.

Consider a fictional chart and a concrete question: should the reader accept a regional operations role? The Career Palace contains a star that favors coordination but has a demanding auxiliary influence. Its San Fang Si Zheng network links to Wealth, Travel, and the opposite Spouse-related field. Hua Quan from a school-specific source flows toward Career during a major cycle. Read in order: Career defines role and public responsibility; the star suggests coordination under pressure; Wealth asks whether the budget and compensation can support the role; Travel asks whether relocation and external conditions are workable; the opposite relationship field asks what shared commitments and negotiation the move affects; the transformation makes decision rights more prominent; the cycle makes the negotiation timely. The scene is an offer with a larger team, relocation, and unclear budget ownership. The responsible conclusion is not “your Career Palace guarantees promotion.” It is “the role may increase responsibility if authority, resources, relocation terms, and shared commitments are workable.” The action is to request a written scope, budget owner, reporting line, travel expectations, support plan, and exit condition.

Suppose a visible star appears in Career and a similar visible pattern is discussed in Spouse. In Career, visibility may describe public accountability, leadership communication, and how an organization reacts to decisions. In Spouse, it may describe how partners handle attention, conflict, or shared plans. The star’s vocabulary is not the question. Likewise, an empty palace does not mean an empty field; it changes where the reader gathers evidence. A palace reading becomes professional when the object, mechanism, conditions, and evidence are named separately.

A common shortcut is to use the Life Palace to explain every relationship, career, health, and money question. Another is to treat the Spouse Palace as a complete description of a future partner, or the Wealth Palace as a promise of income. A third is to count favorable and difficult stars without checking the network or time layer. These shortcuts create dramatic but untestable sentences. The twelve palaces are useful precisely because they separate questions. If two domains interact, state the link and the conditions instead of collapsing them into one personality paragraph.

For a twelve-palace reading, record the question, birth-data and school assumptions, target palace, Life and Body Palaces if relevant, opposite and trine palaces, main and supporting stars, transformation source and destination, natal or time layer, concrete scene, support requirements, counterexample, direct evidence, action, stop condition, and review date. Ask whether the same conclusion would survive if one auxiliary star or time layer changed. Then choose a reversible action such as checking a contract, tracking a work task, discussing a shared plan, reviewing a budget, or seeking qualified support. Ziwei cannot diagnose illness, predict death, establish consent, guarantee wealth or marriage, or replace medical, legal, financial, therapeutic, workplace, or safety judgment. When direct facts conflict with the chart story, revise the story.
